Electrification is key to achieving climate goals. It has also been advertised as a win-win-win, with consumers also saving money on their energy bills. Heat pumps are a key component of electrification policies. However, there are a number of challenges with heat pumps that can make them more expensive to operate than gas furnaces, which raises questions about equity. This session explores the potential for heat pumps to deliver the win-win-win promise, and identifies factors that need to be considered to make sure that heat pump performance is not compromised.
Learning Objectives:
By attending this session, attendees will:
Discuss relative operational costs between gas furnaces and electric heat pumps
Describe important control issues that can impact heat pump performance
Explain the impact of duct leakage on heat pump performance
