Decarbonizing Naturally Occurring Affordable Housing in Cold Climates

This session will highlight three programs aimed at decarbonizing naturally occurring affordable within Minnesota, with a focus on electrification. Each program offered multifamily property owners free to low-cost energy efficiency improvements, including cold climate air source heat pumps, as well as access to funding for pre-weatherization projects. Historically, naturally occurring affordable housing has been an underserved segment of the multifamily sector, with renters bearing a disproportional amount of the energy burden in what are oftentimes old and inefficient buildings. In this presentation, we will examine the challenges and lessons learned when delivering these programs and offer tips on how to better serve this important, but often overlooked, housing type.
