People spend 90% of their time indoors. Indoor air quality has a significant impact on occupants' health, comfort, and productivity. The proper ventilation of an indoor environment is essential for maintaining sufficient indoor air quality. Ventilation systems in residential buildings are highly influenced by the architecture of the buildings, the activities that take place and the amount of pollutants generated. This session provides an overview of indoor pollutants and their sources as well as the importance of indoor air quality in terms of health and comfort. The presentation will include relevant case studies data from literature. A model case of indoor pollutant concentration in a residential building with and without ventilation systems will be presented. Additionally, the simulation approach to air purification of HVAC recirculated air and building envelop infiltration will be discussed. The work by Oak Ridge National Laboratory to better understand the effectiveness of non-energy impacts of ventilation systems, mechanical ventilation systems, and the audit analysis process will be presented.
