Building Systems Group Electricity Infrastructure & Buildings Division
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)
Upper Marlboro, Maryland
Patti Gunderson joined PNNL in 2021 and supports several projects in the Building Systems group. A particular strength is collaborating with manufacturers, designers, builders, and the trades to understand and overcome barriers to adoption of optimized building technologies. Current projects include The Circular Home – an ARPA-E HESTIA-funded project [and] AIRS: Adding Insulation when Re-Siding – a DOE retrofit wall project that adds 1-in. or more of rigid exterior continuous insulation, taped and detailed as the air and water barrier.
Patti most recently spent nearly six years at an independent research testing and certification lab in the Building Science division where she proposed, designed, and led research projects to study constructability, functionality, energy efficiency, and durability of buildings.
Prior to her research career, Patti worked as a mechanical design engineer at an international AE firm, on numerous high-profile projects including flagship Net Zero Brock Environmental Center for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, which also earned Living Building Challenge certification.
Patti has a BA in Music, Literature and Philosophy and a BS in Architectural Engineering - achieved two decades apart, both from the University of Wyoming.
