Jenny Panescu is the Project Coordinator for Dr. Karen Dannemiller’s Indoor Environmental Quality Research Group at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Engineering. She manages a collaborative team of experts across computer, environmental and materials science engineering disciplines toward developing a method which uses smartphone technology to rapidly detect allergens in homes of children with asthma. She also manages a project to develop a novel environmental viral monitoring method using household dust from buildings. She holds a B.S. in microbiology and a M.S. in environmental science and has over two decades of research and management experience at OSU. Research expertise includes past work identifying microsatellite instability and germ-line mutations in DNA mismatch-repair genes in patients with Lynch Syndrome (published in The New England Journal of Medicine), and more recently, isolation, genomic and phenotypic characterization of Marinobacter and Arcobacter bacterial species from natural-gas wells in the Marcellus and Utica-Point Pleasant shale formations (published in Frontiers in Microbiology). She has developed skills in multiple techniques including microscopy, chromatography (IC, LC), mass spectrometry, cultivation and characterization of bacteria from extreme environments, DNA sequencing, genotyping and currently, lateral flow assay development.
