Dr. Michael Johnson is Berkeley Air’s Technical Director. He works primarily on field-based assessments of household energy projects,
including studies on stove performance and usage, indoor air quality, personal exposure, and health impacts. He has over 50 peer-reviewed publications, including articles on exposure to household air pollution, climate-forcing and health-damaging pollutant emissions, stove performance testing, and others. Dr. Johnson is leading the exposure monitoring effort for the HAPIN trial (www.hapintrial.org) and co-authored the WHO Indoor Air Quality Guidelines for Household Fuel Combustion. He is also heavily involved in developing international standards for cookstoves, focusing on developing performance targets. Dr. Johnson is also a technical lead for the Clean Cooking and Climate Consortium, which is developing emission reduction methods for countries to use under the Paris Agreement. Dr. Johnson has a Ph.D. in Environmental Health, Science, & Policy from the University of California, Irvine, and a B.A. in Physics from Colorado College.
