Dr. Schal is the Blanton J. Whitmire Distinguished Professor at NC State. He has a BS in biology from the State University of New York at Albany and a PhD in entomology from the University of Kansas. Between 1984 and 1993, he was Professor and Extension Specialist of urban entomology at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Schal’s lab investigates the biology of cockroaches and bed bugs, the allergens and other biocontaminants they produce, and strategies to mitigate their effects on human health. Coby has published 340 peer-reviewed articles, 32 book chapters and reviews, and he holds 10 patents. He has mentored 38 graduate students and 42 post-doctoral researchers and visiting scientists.
Coby’s awards and honors include the Crown Leadership Award (sponsored by Pest Control Technology/Syngenta), Research Excellence Award in Urban Entomology, Lifetime Honorary Membership (North Carolina Pest Management Association), Distinguished Achievement Award in Urban Entomology, HUD Secretary’s Award for Healthy Homes, Recognition Award in Urban Entomology, and the Nan-Yao Su Award for Innovation and Creativity in Entomology. He was elected Fellow of Entomological Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The cockroach expert Dr. Lou Roth named a new cockroach species, Malaccina schali, after Schal.
