Rick Wertheim is the Senior Vice President for Housing & Green Initiatives at United Way of Long Island. He oversees the green construction, energy retrofit, and workforce development training programs United Way offers to Long Islanders wishing to obtain high-growth, high-demand careers in the emerging energy-efficient home construction and retrofit industry. Rick is a graduate architect, Building Performance Institute (BPI)- and RESNET-trained energy analyst, construction manager and builder/developer. He has constructed or renovated over 150 homes to meet the requirements of ENERGY STAR Certified Homes, EPA Indoor airPLUS, HUD Healthy Homes protocols, ADA universal design principles, and the U.S. Dept of Energy’s “Zero Energy Ready Home” certification program, including 8 homes that received the Grand Award in DOE’s annual Housing Innovation Awards competition. Rick founded the E3 (Energy Efficiency Education) SmartBuild Center in Deer Park, NY, a NYSERDA-funded education center to train the next generation of “green collar” construction workers. Rick oversees workforce training programs including Youth Build, Vets Build, Power UP, and BPI and OSHA courses where students and graduates gain real-world experience constructing and retrofitting affordable and special needs housing.
