Home safety assessments and modifications extend far beyond a mere evaluation of the physical structure of a home. It's imperative to assess not only the home itself but also its compatibility with the individual residing within, thereby supporting the concept of Aging in the Right Place. This approach emphasizes the need to tailor interventions to the unique needs and goals of each person. The presentation will emphasize the crucial role of occupational therapy in conducting comprehensive home assessments and delivering personalized interventions that enhance safety and well-being. The session will look at the importance of determining the right documentation and assessment to support the recommendations that are being made.

  • Understand the distinction between "Aging in Place" and "Aging in the Right Place," and recognize the importance of optimizing the fit or congruence between the person and their physical and social environments.
  • Explore the concept of "Housing Fit" and its importance in ensuring that older adults have homes that suit their needs and contribute to their overall quality of life.
  • Understand the research and rationale supporting the essential role of occupational therapy professionals in home assessments. & Identify key components of the home assessment including documentation and assessments.
