Using Data & Medical (Not Energy) Diagnostic Codes to Measure Program Benefits & Health Outcomes

Results from two projects indicate that weatherizing living spaces may improve occupant health. Projects in Kansas City and Tennessee
use large data sets for health and housing and combine them together to through geographic information systems to look for patterns and relationships. One project uses historic data while the other uses current data to explore the important relationship between health and home performance. Come and hear about the process and strategies of mapping different kinds of data, the challenges of human subject research and getting access without impacting privacy. The focus of the work by both research groups is on the relationship between health and the built environment in entire communities and both provide excellent examples of how programs can collaborate to identify significant community health outcomes using big data.
