The Growing Importance of Differentiation: Ways Contractors are Positioning to Standout from the Crowd

Contractors doing high performance home retrofit work have always faced the challenge of convincing homeowners that more comprehensive jobs, and higher tickets, are worth the investment (think: the age-old challenge of trying to win an attic job against a price with no air sealing). With the push for heat pumps, integrated envelope work and comprehensive electrification, these challenges are even more elevated. At the same time, new types of companies are entering the market–everyone, everywhere it seems is now installing heat pumps, as just one example. The result is that “high performance” contractors—those practicing building science, doing load calculations, and solving problems with a whole house perspective—are facing a whole new breed of competition. In this panel discussion, some of the country’s most successful home performance contractors will share their approaches for standing out in the crowd.
